Captain John Stephens is a 4th generation Floridian with a lifetime of experience on the water. Growing up along the Gulf Coast, fishing has been a passion from a very young age, and he’s spent decades learning the local waters, seasonal patterns, and the best techniques to ensure a successful day on the Gulf of Mexico. His deep knowledge of Destin FL fishing grounds gives guests confidence that they’re in capable hands.
Starting his career on the deck of a fishing boat, John learned every aspect of angling and vessel operation before becoming the owner and operator of Charter Boat Starfire. This hands-on experience allows him to teach, guide, and assist anglers of all skill levels, whether it’s showing beginners the basics or helping experienced anglers fine-tune their technique. He values sharing the thrill of fishing with each guest and making their time on the water both educational and enjoyable.
Captain John specializes in bottom fishing and trolling, using proven techniques to target species like red snapper, grouper, amberjack, and king mackerel. He knows the Gulf’s currents, reefs, and seasonal movements like the back of his hand, ensuring that every trip maximizes the chances of a memorable catch. Beyond fishing, John enjoys meeting new people and creating an atmosphere where laughter, learning, and camaraderie are as much a part of the trip as the fish.
